On the Travails of Independent Publishing from/for the Arab World

Khatt Books and Sharjah Art Foundation will each present their bookmaking process, and explore cultural production through independent publishing from and about the Arab World. Their presentations will highlight the context within which they operate and the critical frameworks and subject matter they engage with. They will present a historical overview of innovative and hybrid publishing platforms from the region. They will elaborate on the effect of their choices on the design and production of their books; touching upon bilingual content and its challenges. The presentation will be followed by a discussion about their shared experiences and the challenges they face in research, archiving, translation, design and distribution.
