bildungsLab*
Resistance & Desire is a book series published by bildungsLab*, a group of migrant scholars and scholars of Color working in the educational and cultural fields. The series connects critical thinking with artistic reflection, addressing themes such as decolonization, feminism, diaspora, and power structures.
The bildungsLab* was launched in 2017 within the framework of the Schools of Tomorrow project, initiated by the House of World Cultures (HKW). It was founded by María do Mar Castro Varela and inspired by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s idea of education as a "coercion-free reordering of desire." The group questions hegemonic discourses and develops utopian concepts for educational institutions.
With seven editions published to date – Bildung. Ein postkoloniales Manifest (Education. A Postcolonial Manifesto), Dekoloniale Interventionen (Decolonial Interventions), Freund*innenschaft. Dreiklang einer politischen Praxis (Friendship: A Triad of Political Praxis), Biting Back. Essen, Diaspora, Widerstand (Biting Back: Food, Diaspora, Resistance), Queer-feministische Positionen. Ausgangspunkt: Südamerika und die Karibik (Queer-Feminist Perspectives: Starting Point South America and the Caribbean), Art that cares. Kunst(pädagogik) als kollektive Fürsorge (Art that Cares: Art (Education) as Collective Care), and Jenseits des Schreckens: Horror, Widerstand und Visionen (Beyond the Horror: Resistance and Visions) – the series comments on and intervenes in the field of anti-racist and anti-hegemonic knowledge production. It invites readers to develop alternative narratives and critically examine societal structures.
