(Can we not be so self-centered and keep our experiences to ourselves? Diasporic remembrances of Fasia Jansen, 2021)

Film screening at ANGIE STARDUST FOYER (HKW)

Fasia Jansen was a German singer and activist, a figure of Black, queer, anti-fascist, and anticapitalist resistance.

The film asks us: “How do we, as a diaspora, want to remember Fasia Jansen? How do we establish a relationship through our bodies, which are an archive and resonance space for Fasia Jansen’s story?”

Fasia Jansen Ensemble brings the folk singer’s spirit to life in a community-based, Black and diasporic tradition in which stories are developed, told, and connected.

Aline Benecke’s flm combines the choir’s powerful performance with original vocal recordings of Fasia, evoking the power of solidarity from today’s queer Black perspective and finding a place in current political movements, German institutions, and collective memories.

The film was produced with Akademie der Künste der Welt, Cologne.
