Pre-fair program // Rebuilding PAULINE: The Sharing of a Process/A Practical Workshop

Participant: radiophønix

A practical workshop for sound artists, composers, radio artists, radio geeks.

Rebuilding PAULINE is a guided tour (workshop) through the detailed steps of a sound sculptural process based on one single sound: white noise. From the use of different microphones and loudspeakers, exploring spatial phenomena like reflections, reverbs and resonance, as well as the application of strategies of sound color grading, like reamping and manual filtering, we walk step by step into the depth of the white noise following our ears and intuition.

PAULINE takes its name from the composer Pauline Oliveros and invites the participants to apply deep listening into the maximum information of sound – white noise – as a means of creation.

PAULINE: A radiophønix Sculpture

White noise is the full spectrum of sound. It is all frequencies, all sounds and all noises ever simultaneously all at once. White noise is a perfectly balanced equilibrium of an infinite collection of possibilities.

PAULINE is 1 of 17 sound sculptures out of the series “radiophønix”. PAULINE is installed in the ether of radio waves via a simultaneous and “synchronous” transmission of at least 24 radio stations world wide. It consists of 48 individual channels of filtered white noise and has a fixed duration of 40 minutes. In the individual broadcasts of the radio stations – just one or two of the 48 channels – it appears rather as a technical malfunction, the entirety of the sculpture remains hidden. Only a simultaneous display of all the broadcasts would reveal the global sound installation radiophønix/PAULINE is.

Such displays we call public listenings. They are improvised (a)live remixes turning the signals into a fleeting multi-channel sculpture. Each public listening will be different depending on location, performing artist, technical and spatial arrangement and the number of loudspeakers to be used. Through interferences, dropouts and delays in the broadcast the radiophonic technology expresses itself.
