Est.Discipline – Miss Read

Est.Discipline

Est. Discipline is zine label by a visual artist Yuka Kobayashi based in Tokyo and Berlin. Born in Tokyo, Kobayashi studied women’s wear design at the Bunka Gakuen University, also located in Tokyo, Japan. As an artist, Kobayashi has developed a multimedia practice that runs the gamut from ink on paper to painting, watercolour, digital collage, and more. Her pursuit of different formats to express her visual narrative allows her to switch fluidly between many different mediums from digital to analogue and back again, constantly seeking out the most relevant combinations of material and method.

OBJECT / OBJECTION draws from the painting archive created by interdisciplinary visual artist Yuka Kobayashi between 2020 and 2024. The title itself embodies the dual nature of the project; as object implies material substance, while objection suggests resistance. Together, they frame the artist’s work as both an archive and an argument; exploring painting not just as a surface, but as a site of meaning, memory, and critique.

Reflecting the story of the film ‘The Fragment of the Raging Love’ that I produced in 2018,

it narrates my personal experiences with daily ‘amnesia,’ exploring ways to bridge the gaps in memory by reminiscence and discover hope amid my ‘personal blanks.’

The design features a unique mirrored layout: Japanese text is revealed when read from right to left, and English when read from left to right.
