JEFFREY CHARLES HENRY PEACOCK – Miss Read

JEFFREY CHARLES HENRY PEACOCK

After having been reminded by Miss Read to carefully review our exhibitor profile we've settled to keep the pretence of that feigned distanciation of the third person. That sullen tone and idiolect of the corporate gallery press release so readily accepted by the art world and unfortunately often overheard in those vernissage, careerist and vainglorious conversations of artists themselves. Anyway, here goes...

Jeffrey Charles Henry Peacock is the collaborative art practice of Dave Smith and Thom Winterburn. Since 2005 JCHP has produced and distributed texts alongside the production of physical artworks. Initially texts took the form of cards and posters distributed through the post. In the last ten years texts have grown and subsequently developed in book form. These are distributed for free, often within the context of public display.

JCHP’s writing explores ideas extrapolated by Marcel Mauss, relating to gift-exchange as a means of distribution; an alternative to producing artworks predetermined by dreams modelled on the realisation of exchange value. JCHP’s practice explores inherent contradictions in maintaining an art practice opposed to an art system subjugated by a wider corporate tyranny, invested in preserving the facility of capitalist accumulation by dispossession; gloomy conditions for a field of cultural production compliantly tied to corporate and colonial power structures.

(For context this article by Richard Birkett [ https://mapmagazine.co.uk/report-production-jeffrey-charles-henry-peacock ] effectively describes JCHP’s earlier written output.)
