manori interdependent editions

Manori is a publishing team that curates art publications.
It was born out of a desire to experiment combinations of expressive languages and media in different forms. We practice self-publishing and we work together with artists to develop their work in the form of both print and digital productions. We produce, select and disseminate visual narratives of survival in contemporary dystopia.

A story about the seductive power of money, a noir comic strip full of mystery and plot twists. The reverse side features the poster of the story, showcasing the characters with the artist’s signature faces. In this production the artist, who normally works with oil painting, experimented with creating a fully painted comic using acrylic colours.

This flipbook can be flipped on both sides. It features 6 seconds — 72 frames — taken from a video recording made during a rehearsal session of the Melma Crew collective in November 2023 in Milan.

Melma is a project by Zoe Romano, Alex Piacentini and Giacomo Silva. Since 2021, the trio of artists and designers have been weaving an interdisciplinary practice, driven by the urgency to tune into the hidden and pulsing currents of the landscapes they explore. Their work moves through the microcosms of the unobservable to the naked eye: those worlds that to a naïve gaze seem inhabited by fragile, flickering subvisibilia and exist below the threshold of human perception, in this context, a living thing emerges for the first time that underlies human existence and brings us closer to the non-human.
Each iteration of Melma's practice takes different forms, responding to the spaces that accommodate them and unfolding through a polyphony of disciplines, techniques and visual languages. The trio navigates this fluid terrain by drawing on the composite knowledge of their personal paths, resulting in interventions that are as much encounters as they are experiments in vision.
The dimension of sound is deeply intertwined in this practice: in each performance, the artists open a dialogue with various electronic musicians, inviting them to generate sound waves through synthesizers and other instruments, to amplify the experience and tune in to the movement of the microscopic creatures protagonists of the scene. The result is a dynamic exchange: frequencies resonating through visual textures, an oscillation between the audible and the invisible, an ever-changing landscape.

Documenting urban palms resistance
Since 2020 the authors use a Whatsapp chat to document the brave palm trees that resist the inhospitable environment of Milan’s smog-dense streets, and elsewhere. This booklet presents selected samples of plant courage from the year 2022.
