S(O)Lmagazine – Miss Read

S(O)Lmagazine

S(O)L magazine is an independent publication founded and edited by Tomone Nakayama, a Tokyo-born editor currently based in London. Drawing on her background in magazine editing, Nakayama launched S(O)L in April 2025 as a self-published project that explores everyday habits from unfamiliar angles.
Rather than categorising itself as a conventional lifestyle magazine, S(O)L seeks to gently loosen the mind and body by re-examining routines that are often taken for granted. Produced in close collaboration with a small creative team, the magazine is printed in limited editions and distributed through independent bookshops and art spaces across Japan.

S(O)Lmagazine ISSUE1 BREAKFAST cover
S(O)L magazine is a lifestyle publication that lifts “morning rituals” out of the everyday and reinterprets them from unfamiliar angles, gently loosening the mind and body from the repetitions of daily life.
Issue 1 centres on “breakfast”. We visited the homes of people living in Japan whose cultural backgrounds are less commonly recognised there, following their morning meal from shopping to the final bite. Each feature brings together their recipes with the personal stories that surfaced during our time together.
All photography was shot on film in the early hours when sunlight begins to pour in. The gentle grain and soft luminosity unique to film express a quiet sense of morning happiness.
