Trashumantes – Miss Read

Trashumantes

Trashumantes is a publishing project founded by Colombian artist Camilo Baquero Burgos in 2023, which brings out art books in collaboration and participation of migrant communities in Germany. Its aim is the publication and promotion of literature, images, artworks and books produced in migrant contexts, as well as the integration of these communities in the process of creation, production and distribution of the publications. Its mission is to foster self-representation, collective authorship, and access to publishing as a democratic and artistic practice. In this way, the project strengthens cooperation and solidarity between the various migrant populations active in the artistic and publishing sector in the country.

All publications are self- or collective-produced using home printers and hand-bound, emphasizing small-scale, accessible, and independent production methods.

To date, Trashumantes has published four books and two fanzines under its own imprint.

The Memory of the Warps
The Memory of the Warps, Trashumantes, 2025

This book was developed with the participation of the Colombian diaspora in Berlin. Over five sessions, ten people came together to explore memories of the violence in Colombia through the body and poetry. During workshops in collaboration with the artist Camila Ivana Vargas about body expression, active listening, writing, poetry and bookbinding, the participants produced poems and letters that were turned into a book.

At the end, the group bound the pages of the books one by one with colored threads and paper clips. Each book has a hand-made French binding with three different colors. Its layout proposes different reading directions, inviting readers to explore different perspectives on topics like violence and migration, as well as body movements while reading.
