On Kino – Miss Read

On Kino

On Kino is a cultural community space for film screening founded by artist and filmmaker Qin Dao in 2017 in Guangzhou, China. We aim to present films in a composite and contextualised approach, also encourage diverse participation and loose-linked collective action through the vehicle of a very traditional medium, woodblock printing.
Centred on film and archive, On Kino's work covered a wide range of social issues such as anti-war, women's liberation, labourer rights & resistance, and ethnographies in various places. Woodcut as a medium in handcraft, is in response to the commercialised film industry. We want to use woodcuts as a communication tool, to raise awareness of related issues not only in individuals' everyday experiences but in a global context, making people more engaged in social and political issues through art at the same time.
